Cheapest Way to Hook a Wii to the Internet

The Nintendo Wii has changed the way people across the world play video games. With its exciting motion controls, video games are transformed from a passive activity to a moving, living experience that everyone in the family can enjoy. Much of the system's utility comes from the ability to play many titles online. However, many individuals are concerned with the cost-prohibitive nature of hooking a Wii up to the Internet. Fortunately, doing so is not difficult, and it won't cost a fortune.
  1. Hook It Up

    • If you own a wireless router, it won't cost you a dime to connect your Wii to the Internet---there are no peripherals or connections you will have to purchase. Other individuals will need to purchase a Wi-Fi connector. Because it is designed for online use, the Wii system possesses wireless capability straight out of the box. Follow the factory instructions to set up your Wii system and make sure that it is in working order before connecting it to the internet.

    Connect to Wi-Fi

    • Your Wii system has several different submenus that you can access by pointing your Wii remote at the screen and clicking on the icons with the trigger underneath the controller. Look for the Wii Settings menu and click on it. Click the submenu marked "Internet." Once you have done so, simply run a search for an access point under your Wii's Connection Settings, and you'll be good to go. If your home has a wireless signal, your Wii will find the signal on its own.

    Troubleshooting

    • There are a few things to bear in mind when connecting your Wii to the Internet. The first is the fact that your system must be close enough to your home's wireless router to find a signal. Most Wii systems will be able to find a connection within about 100 feet; too close to that mark, though, and the connection might not be strong. If your router is not wireless, you will need to connect with an Ethernet cable. Finally, ensure that the connection settings of your computer will allow for the Wii to hook up to it. Make sure your firewall doesn't block your Wii from connecting.
