How to Use a Component Cable on an Old TV With Wii

The Nintendo Wii uses a component cable that has a red, white, and yellow plug that control visuals and sound. Most newer televisions offer the correct ports to get the Wii operational. However, some older televisions have only contain coaxial ports. If that's the case with yours, you can get your Nintendo Wii working with the use of a VCR and a piece of coaxial cable.

Things You'll Need

  • Coaxial cable
  • Old VCR (with red, white and yellow plugs on the back or front)

Instructions

    • 1

Take the red, white and yellow cords and plug them into the back of the VCR in the corresponding slots (it's color-coded). Some VCR's may only have red and yellow; that is OK, as you can leave the red off without affecting game play.

    • 2

Plug one end of the coaxial cable into the cable slot on the back of the VCR labeled "OUT" or "ANT OUT." Make sure the connection is firm and will not pull off when pressure is applied.

    • 3

Plug the remaining end of the coaxial cable into the back of your television (most older televisions will only have one place to plug this in; on newer televisions, look for the cable hook-in called "ANT IN" or "IN"). Make sure the connection is tight and that it will not come loose.

    • 4

Turn on the Nintendo Wii console and wait for it to power completely on; you will know it is powered on when the light above the power button is solid blue.

    • 5

Turn your VCR on with either the VCR remote or with the power button located on the front of the VCR.

    • 6

Turn your television on and flip through the channels until you find the appropriate channel. You will notice everything sync together when you hit the right channel--the Nintendo Wii home screen will show up on your television.
