How to Play LAN Games on a School Network

Most schools, especially colleges, are wired on a local area network, or LAN. This easy access to LAN connections has increased the popularity of computer and console gaming among dorm rooms. LAN connections enable multiple consoles or computers to connect and communicate together, facilitating multiplayer games or the sharing of media, among other benefits.

      Turn on your gaming devices, such as your Xbox 360 or PC.

      Plug in an Ethernet cable to your gaming device.

      Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the local area network. Most dormitories and classrooms have Ethernet cable wall hookups.

      Wait for your gaming device to recognize the local area network connection. The connection should be nearly instantaneous. PCs will notify you in a pop-up bubble in the taskbar that your connection is successful. Gaming consoles may inform you of the connection in their network settings menus, or even in the game menu.

      To join a public game, look for another person's gaming device name in the network menu or in the game menu, and join it.
