Begin by searching for a used Xbox console. The first place to look is a used game store such as GameStop or GameCrazy. Locate a store in your area and call them to check availability. In February of 2009, GameStop stopped buying old Xbox consoles from customers. For this reason, their stock might be low and in some cases less expensive than other stores.
Know the difference between used and refurbished consoles. When purchasing from a store, ask if the console has been refurbished. This means that the Xbox was malfunctioning and sent in for repairs. A used console means that at the time of trade-in it was still in working condition. Always purchase used over refurbished.
Use an online retailer such as amazon.com or eBay to search for used consoles. Unlike used game stores, these retailers allow direct purchase from the seller, meaning that prices are competitive and buyers can purchase consoles that come in their original packaging, or with accessories.
Use a credit card or PayPal account to make purchases from online retailers. EBay insures all PayPal purchases in case the seller offers fraudulent goods, or if the goods were damaged during shipping. Amazon.com offers refunds if the seller doesn't ship the item or ships the wrong item.
Search direct trade sites such as craigslist.com for local deals or sellers of used consoles. When purchasing over these sites, contact the seller first to make sure they're not attempting to commit fraud, and inquire about insurance for the items being shipped. Retain any contact information in case of a problem.
