How to Hook Up PS3 to a Surround Sound Receiver

Older gaming systems like Atari or the Nintendo Entertainment System have very basic audio, but newer systems like the Playstation 3 provide a much more comprehensive soundtrack. Fortunately for avid gamers, there is a way to bypass the tiny speakers on your TV and enjoy fuller sound. Once your PS3 is hooked up to your TV, you can run it to your stereo receiver and enjoy a more complete gaming experience.

      Turn off your stereo receiver, TV and PS3, and then disconnect them from their power sources.

      Measure the distance between your PS3 and your stereo receiver, and make sure your optical cable is long enough to span the distance.

      Locate the Digital Out port on the back of your PS3. It is between the HDMI Out and AC Multi Out ports. Insert one end of optical cable into the Digital Out port.

      Locate the optical port on your stereo receiver. All stereo receivers are different, but it is most likely located on the back of the unit. Consult your owner's guide if necessary. Insert the other end of the optical cable into your stereo receiver.

      Plug your stereo receiver, TV and PS3 back into their electrical outlets.
