How to Repair an Xbox DVD ROM

The Xbox is a great and dependable console most of the time. When one does break down, the fault usually lies within the DVD drive. Microsoft opted to use a Thompson DVD drive, which is pretty cheaply made. Due to this, the DVD drive on the Xbox breaks down frequently. When this happens, you have two options, one being send your Xbox to Microsoft for repairs, which could cost you time and money. The other option is, to fix it yourself. Here are some simple steps that can be taken to get your Xbox back up and running.

Instructions

  1. Taking apart the Xbox console

    • 1

      Unplug the Xbox from the wall and the television.

      Flip your Xbox over and locate the screws. These can be found under the rubber feet on the bottom of the console.

      Remove the screws.

      Lift the top cover off of your Xbox.

    Fixing the DVD drive.

      Locate the DVD drive. Looking down from the top, it will look like a silver box.

      Remove the three screws that hold the DVD drive and the hard drive in place.

      Remove the DVD drive from the Xbox.

      Remove the screws on the DVD drive. There are two of them on the top of the DVD drive.

      Push in on the two catches on both sides of the front of the DVD drive. The cover will then pop off of the DVD drive.

      Check for any kind of physical problem on the DVD drive. If there are any physical problems, you may need to replace the drive.

      Clean both lasers using the cotton swab and alcohol.

      Following the steps above, Re-assemble your Xbox.
