How to Increase Your APM in Starcraft II

The player with the highest actions per minute does not automatically win in "StarCraft II." You could get a high APM by rapidly leading your workers around in a circle the entire game, but you would obviously lose. Your APM is reflective of how productive you are during a game, and the most productive player will most likely win the match. If you want a meaningful increase in your APM, you need to learn the tricks for streamlining your play to waste less time. The less time you waste preparing to give commands, the more actions you can take every minute.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan your beginning build sequence before the game begins. If you have to spend time thinking about what buildings or units you want, your opponent will be using that time to actually build buildings and create units. It will also drag down your APM.

    • 2

Use bindings for units. When you select a group of units or buildings and then press "Control" plus any number key, pressing that number key will automatically re-select those units to let you quickly issue orders without wasting time selecting units.

    • 3

Use bindings for production buildings. This allows you to queue up new units for production by calling up a building with a control group. Putting your hatcheries, lairs, and hives in control groups as a Zerg player gives you similar access to your larvae.

    • 4

Learn your hot keys. Manually clicking on the icons to build units or issue commands to a unit wastes valuable seconds dragging your cursor across the screen.

    • 5

Scout the map constantly to get a better tactical awareness of the map and lets you do something productive even in the early game before you have many units to control.

    • 6

Build whenever your minerals and gas accumulate past about 1,000. If you get past this point it is a sign you aren't building enough or training enough new units.

    • 7

Stop playing matches when you get tired. "StarCraft II" is a tactical game that requires you to think quickly and plan far in advance and when you are tired your game play will naturally slow down.
