How to Use a Flash Drive With an Xbox 360 if You Don't Have a Hard Drive

To fully take advantage of the Xbox 360's potential, you must have a storage unit attached to the device. One potential option you can use is a USB flash drive. There are three requirements for your flash drive for it to properly work with the Xbox 360: it is 32GB or smaller, it has at least 1GB of free space and it uses the Windows FAT32 format. Not meeting these requirements will cause the flash drive to either not work or will affect its performance. You must first format the flash drive before the Xbox 360 will recognize it.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the flash drive in an available USB slot in the front of your Xbox 360 console.

    • 2

Press the "Guide" button on the front of your Xbox 360 controller. This button is in the shape of silver X, located in-between the Start and Back buttons.

    • 3

Select "Settings," "System Settings" and then "Memory."

    • 4

Select the "USB Storage Device" option in the Storage Devices window.

    • 5

Select "Customize" or "Configure Now." Customize enables you to set aside only a portion of the flash drive for Xbox 360 usage, while Configure Now will erase all content on the flash drive and use all available memory for Xbox 360 usage. Once configured, you can now use the flash drive as a memory unit.

Select "USB Storage Device" when prompted, such as when downloading a demo or saving a game, to save the data to your flash drive.
