How to Use Potions on Others in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

In "The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion," alchemist characters create potions and poisons by combining ingredients with a variety of effects. Beneficial potions, such as those that restore health or award stat bonuses, won't work on any character but your own. Only poisons will affect other characters. Poisons give you an advantage in battle by dealing elemental damage, sapping stamina or preventing an enemy from casting spells. Once you've made a poison, you can use it by applying it to your weapon.

Instructions

    • 1

Raise your alchemy skill level by making any type of potion or by eating alchemical ingredients. The strength of your poisons will increase with each alchemy level gained.

    • 2

Buy or find alchemy equipment. You need at least a mortar and pestle to make potions. Optional equipment includes the retort, calcinator and alembic. You can find equipment in many dungeons or purchase it from alchemy shops in most towns.

    • 3

Select the mortar and pestle in your inventory. If you have other alchemy equipment in the inventory, it's equipped automatically.

    • 4

Select "Add Ingredient." Choose an ingredient that has negative effects. For example, bergamot seeds damage Magicka, Clannfear claws paralyze and ectoplasm has a shock damage effect. When you select an ingredient, you'll see up to four of its properties depending on your alchemy level.

    • 5

Select "Add Ingredient" again. Select an ingredient that shares a negative property with the first ingredient. For example, nightshade and troll fat both damage health. To make a poison, you need to mix at least two ingredients that share one or more properties.

    • 6

Add up to two more ingredients, if desired. By adding extra ingredients, you can create a stronger poison with multiple negative effects. For instance, to make a poison that paralyzes and silences an enemy while dealing frost damage, combine vampire dust, milk thistle seeds and harrada.

    • 7

Select "Create" to make the poison.

    • 8

Open the inventory and equip the weapon you want to poison. You can poison a melee weapon or an arrow.

    • 9

Look for the poison in your inventory's potions list. Poisons are colored green; beneficial potions are pink.

    • 10

Select the poison and then select "Yes" to apply the poison to your current weapon.

    • 11

Strike a character with your weapon to attack him with the poison.
