How to Reprogram a Wii

The Wii gaming console comes already programmed with various settings and channels. For many players, these are sufficient. Others, however, want to be able to do such things as play homemade games or use a backup disc of their favorite commercial games. Unfortunately, the default programming for the Wii will not allow you to do this and the system will need to be reprogrammed to accommodate this desire. Keep the Wii console connected to the Internet to complete this process.

Find the firmware version that your Wii console is running. Select the round "Wii" button with your Wii remote. Select the "Wii Settings" box, which appears with a wrench icon. Get the SD card ready for the reprogramming process. Place the SD card into the proper slot in your Wii console. If you have not already done so, unzip the "BackupLoaderInstaller.zip" file. Open this folder and select "install.bat." Refer to the information you recorded in Step 3. Select "O" if your firmware is lower than 4.0 and "N" if your version is 4.0 or higher. Enter the letter of the drive that the SD card is inserted in. Answer the screen prompt asking whether the card is FAT16 formatted. If you are unsure, select "Y." Wait for the Wii console to complete formatting.

Begin the reprogramming process. Select the round "Wii" button in the main menu with your Wii remote. Select the "Data Management" box. Select the "Channels" button that appears with a Wii icon. Click on the "SD Card" button on the top right of the screen. Press "Yes" when the "load/boot.dol" option appears. Downgrade your Wii console when the LoadMii program is automatically launched if you have 4.0 or newer firmware. Press the "A" button on your Wii remote to extract the data from the SD card when prompted. Press the down arrow button on your Wii remote until the arrow on the screen is next to the "DowngradeIOS35.dol" option and press "A" to select. Select "Downgrade IOS35 (run first)" and press "A" to accept. Press "Exit" when the process completes and returns to the main menu. Press the down arrow on your remote until the green arrow points to "WADBatchInstaller.dol" and press the "A" button to open.

Install the new channels on your Wii console with the WAD Batch Installer program. Follow the prompts on the screen, pressing the "A" button when directed to install the IOS16 and CIOS249 channels if they are not already present on your console. Press "A" when prompted to batch install all channels, including the HomeBrew Channel, Wii Backup Launcher, GameCube Backup Launcher and DVD Dumper channels.
