Elemental Crests
In order to unlock Sonic's elemental crests, which make Sonic stronger in the respective element, you have to collect silver medals. Obtaining 100 silver medals will unlock the Dark crest, obtaining 105 silver medals will unlock the Fire crest and obtaining 110 silver medals will unlock the Wind crest.
Medals are obtained by moving quickly through the game's levels. Depending on your speed, you will receive a bronze medal, silver medal, gold medal or (if you weren't fast enough) no medal at all. While only silver medals are needed to unlock the elemental crests, gold medals count toward unlocking the crests as well.
Party Characters
Fire souls are fiery rings that only appear in certain missions, where three small white lines appear to the right of the mission title. Once you have found a fire soul, you cannot lose it unless you restart the mission. New party mode characters are unlocked by collecting fire souls. Shadow is unlocked by collecting 30 fire souls. Cream is unlocked by collecting 42 fire souls, Silver is unlocked by collecting 87 fire souls and Blaze is unlocked by collecting 105 fire souls.
Mini-Games
Thirteen mini-games can also be unlocked by collecting fire souls. The mini-games and the number of fire souls needed to unlock each are:
