How to Import Wii Games

The Nintendo Wii made a big splash with its 2006 debut, popularizing motion-control gaming and continuing long-running franchises like "Metroid," Super Mario Bros." and "The Legend of Zelda." As of January 2011, Nintendo has sold more than 75 million Wii consoles worldwide. Unfortunately, games do not debut at the same time across the globe, meaning the gamers in different regions may not be able to play new titles as early as others. While importing games is an option, the Wii is region-coded, meaning that a Wii game from Japan won't play on an American Wii console.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine which region you wish to import games from. For example, if you are American, you likely want to import Japanese games, as some games are released in Japan before they are released in the U.S.

    • 2

Find an online retailer that specializes in imported consoles. Ordering an imported console is the safest way to play foreign games. While you can order modified consoles or even modify your own, this may void your warranty and you risk damaging the console.

    • 3

Order games online via either an import retailer or online auction sites. Though you cannot play imported games on incompatible consoles, importing games is perfectly legal, and online retailers are not difficult to find.
