How to Install a Game on the Hard Drive in a Wii

You can download games from the Wii Shop Channel. However, the Nintendo Wii does not come with a lot of hard drive space. The internal memory is just 512 MB (megabytes), though it is measured in "blocks" on the system. While this is more than enough for the basic channels and save files, it is better to use an SD card to expand the Wii's space.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your Wii console to the Internet. The Wii comes with wireless capability, and can be configured by selecting the "Wii" button on the lower left corner of the main menu screen.

    • 2

Select the Wii Shop Channel from the main menu screen. This is usually in the upper left corner of the first "page" of the menu screen.

    • 3

Choose either "WiiWare" or "Virtual Console" to find games that you can download onto your Wii console. In both sections you can browse by new or popular releases as well as search by title.

    • 4

Select the game that you wish to download. The Wii channel will display the specifications of the download, including the size of the download, how much of the Wii memory will be available before the download and afterwards. If the Wii does not have enough system memory, you will not be able to download the game unless you have an SD card.

    • 5

Confirm the download. Once the download completes, it will be available from the main menu. If you have more than 12 channels or games on your Wii, it may be on the second screen.
