Unlocking Training Modes
Point the Wiimote cursor at the Training button on the main menu of the Wii Sports game and press A. The button has an image of a purple dumbbell on it and can be found at the bottom of the screen, near the center.
Point and click with the Wiimote and A button to select the number of human players you'd like to play with in Training Mode and to choose which Mii each player will use. This is an opportunity to adjust for left-handedness or change the appearance of your in-game avatar, or "Mii."
Point the Wiimote at the button for Home Run training and press A. This button is located in the second column from the left in the very top row. If this is your first time playing the Wii Sports Training Mode, then this is the only row available to choose from for all of the sports.
Complete each training mode to unlock the challenge on the next lowest row for that sport. For Wii Baseball, you first play Hitting Home Runs, then Swing Control and then Batting Practice.
Hitting Home Runs
Hold the Wiimote as if it were the handle of a baseball bat, with the A button facing towards you. Stand perpendicular to your television with your Wiimote over your shoulder. Hold it over the right shoulder for right-handed people or over the left for left-handed.
Swing the Wiimote as hard as you can when it gets close enough to your Mii, starting out low and ending high. It will take some practice to learn the timing for when to swing in order to get a home run. A home run is a hit into the stands or out of the park. If your home run crosses the foul lines to the left or right it will not count.
Continue swinging and hitting at the balls until the round is over. The pitcher throws 10 balls at you and your progress is tracked on a bar in the upper left corner. A gold star is displayed on this meter for every home run that is scored with an extra large gold star being awarded for a home run hit out of the park. A blank circle appears to indicate any pitch that did not result in a home run.
Hit all 10 home runs and hit for a total of at least 5,708 feet in order to obtain a Platinum medal.
Swing Control
Take the same stance and grip on your Wiimote as before. You'll be swinging at 10 pitches once again. Notice that there is a colored area directly in front of your Mii, extending forward in a series of cones.
Swing the Wiimote to hit the ball when it comes near enough. You want to aim towards the dark blue area directly in front of you, however any hit made within the cones will score points.
Hit the ball with the right timing to send it straight ahead of you for the first four pitches, a little early on pitches five to seven and a little late on pitches eight to 10. For pitches five, six and seven the cone shifts to left field for right-handed people and right field for left-handed people. For pitches eight, nine and 10 the cone will shift again to whichever side has not yet been occupied. Swing with the correct timing to send the ball right where you want it.
Score 65 or more points over the course of your 10 pitches to net a platinum medal. To track your score watch the path of the ball, marked by an orange line in the air. If it goes through the dark blue area, you got 10 points. The outside blue area scores you six points, while the white area scores you three. If you hit a fair ball that is outside all of the colored cone areas, you get one point.
Batting Practice
Take your Wii Baseball stance but stay somewhat relaxed and loose. This will be the longest training mode yet and you don't want to hurt yourself by over-straining or -stressing. Batting practice is all about hitting the ball and keeping it in-bounds.
Swing the Wiimote short and fast at the balls as they approach the plate. Swing from low to high to hit fly balls and from high to low to hit grounders. Be sure the ball doesn't cross the foul lines to the left and right of the field.
Swing with your previously practiced timing when the ball comes straight over the plate. A ball on the outside edge of the plate, away from your Mii, requires a swing that's a tad late. Swing a little early when the ball comes on the inside of the plate, close in to your Mii. The proper swing timing will keep all your balls in the field.
Get fair hits on all 30 pitches in order to win a platinum medal.
