Super Smash Bros Brawl Tips

Released in 2008 for the Nintendo Wii, "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" is the third installment in the "Smash Bros." series. Players can choose from 35 different characters ranging from Mario to Sonic the Hedgehog and pit them against each other in a free-for-all fight. While the control system is simplified for this game, getting the edge on opponents may still prove challenging, even for experienced players.
  1. Commit to a Character

    • When learning the game, familiarize yourself with one character instead of switching between several. Each character has a unique fighting style, different skills and an assortment of combinations that vary based on the button pressed. Truly mastering the use of a character takes time, and experimenting with all of them only slows the process down. While you should try out all the characters to discover which one suits your style best, stick to one after making that decision.

    Use Smash Attacks

    • Smash attacks play a critical role in defeating opponents. They inflict more damage than regular attacks and send enemies flying over farther distances. Since players win in "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" by flinging opponents completely out of the arena, mastering these attacks is required. Smash attacks are executed by "smashing" the control stick in any direction and hitting the attack button simultaneously. To add even more power to a smash attack, hold down the attack button after smashing the control stick.

    Drop the Shield

    • In past versions of "Smash Bros." games, players had only two options after deflecting an attack with the shield: jump or grab. In "Super Smash Bros. Brawl," simply drop the shield altogether after using it for defensive purposes and counter with an attack of your choice. Previous games did not allow the player to drop the shield and attack fast enough for this strategy to work effectively.

    Grab Opponents

    • Grabbing your opponents is a useful offensive tactic. Not only does this allow you to unleash a few attacks while holding them in place, it also gives you the option to throw them. Players are eliminated from the brawl when thrown off the screen entirely, so aim your throws at the section of the screen you are closest to. For instance, grabbing a player at the top of the screen and throwing him up gives you a good shot at removing him from the competition permanently.

Pay Attention to the Damage Meter

    • In "Super Smash Bros. Brawl," the damage meter actually consists of percentage points. Players begin each brawl at 0 percent, and some may even survive as high as 250 if no one finishes them off with a strong move. Watch your opponents' damage meters alertly. When it reaches 100 percent, start targeting them for the final knockout blow. Past the 150 percent mark, almost any smash attack with finish them off.
