How to Run an Emulator on a Wii SD Card

The Nintendo Wii's use of the SD card slot instead of an exclusive memory card slot has expanded the use of the Wii to include several Homebrew applications. These applications install directly to the Wii Channel loader and can include Emulators that work as old systems like Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis and the original Nintendo Entertainment System. Running these emulators may take several minutes to install and set up, but afterward it gives you instant access to class games.

Instructions

  1. Homebrew Installation

    • 1

Download the Bannerbomb installation files from WiiBrew.org. These files allow you to install the Homebrew Channel to your Nintendo Wii.

    • 2

Insert an SD card into your computer. Format the SD card by right-clicking on the card in "My Computer" and selecting the "Format" option. Once the card is formatted, drag and drop the downloaded Bannerbomb files directly to the root of the card.

    • 3

Place the SD card into the front slot on the Wii console. Restart the Wii console and when you reach the Wii Channels page, click on the small "SD Card" icon at the bottom left of the screen. Follow the on-screen directions to install BannerBomb.

    • 4

Accept the installation by pressing the "A" button and wait for the installation to complete. Do not remove the SD card or restart the Wii during this time or you could damage your system.

    • 5

Load the Homebrew Channel once the installation has finished and the Wii has restarted. If the channel installed correctly, a menu will appear with floating bubbles.

    Emulator Installation

    • 6

Click on the "Homebrew Browser" from the main menu of the Homebrew Channel. The Homebrew Browser connects to the internet and loads a list of available downloads for the Homebrew Channel.

    • 7

Install any updates that the browser requests. There is typically a new update every few months. This is critical to fix any errors and add software that was not available on the previous release.

    • 8

Click on the "Emulators" tab within the Homebrew Browser. Use the Wii remote to scroll through the list of emulators available for the system.

    • 9

Click on the "Download" link for the emulators you want to download. A meter will appear and will fill as the emulator is downloaded.

    • 10

Exit out of the Homebrew Browser and go back to Homebrew Channel. Click on the newly emulator to load the software.
