The Best Wii Games for Older Adults

Most people think of children when they think of the prime audience for video games, but thanks to Nintendo's Wii system, that is changing. Many Wii games are popular with older adults, and the physical and psychological aspects of Wii games make the games good for their health as well. According to a Senior's Advocate article by Christopher Leto, Wii games can increase the ability of older adults to process information and divide attention. Also, they're fun.
  1. Wii Fit

    • One Wii game often recommended for older adults is Wii Fit. Wii Fit has more than 40 activities and exercises in four main categories: strength training, yoga, balance and aerobics. The game's balance board tracks your movements and checks daily progress and body mass index (BMI). The game allows up to eight different profiles, so family and friends can all keep track and compare progress and Fit Credits. Wii Fit also lets you create your own personalized goals. The American Council on Exercise has said that people who use the Wii Fit show "a marked increase in exercise intensity", and an article in Care Givers NW quotes Dr. Bryant Stamford of the University of Kentucky as saying the Wii Fit is "perfect for seniors."

    Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree

    • Mental stimulation has been connected to a lower risk of contracting Alzheimer's later in life. The Alzheimer's Association promotes playing games as a good way of keeping your brain active, and the American Association of Retired Persons specifically recommends Big Brain Academy "to keep your mind sharp." Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree is designed as a virtual college which offers a series of puzzles and math problems for players to solve. The game is easy to play but allows up to eight people to participate at the same time.

    Rayman Raving Rabbids

    • Rayman Raving Rabbids is a series of games centered around defeating a race of evil rabbits. The games offer a collection of silly mini-games in which you have to fight off or elude the rabbits by dancing, spitting carrot juice, using a flyswatter or jumping from place to place. The games are designed to take advantage of the Wii's remote control stick, which means it's easy to play while still requiring skill to get through many situations. The Rayman Raving Rabids games are good choices for older adults who want a game they can also play with their kids or grandkids.
