Aircraft Games for the Wii

The Nintendo Wii offers a vast number of games in a variety of genres, including games that simulate the experience of controlling an aircraft. Many of these games take place in World War II, giving players the added benefit of experiencing recreations of real-life battles. Most of these games are widely available at retail department stores or stores specializing in video games; others you can download from the Wii̵7;s Virtual Console.
  1. Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII

    • Released March 20, 2007 by Ubisoft, "Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII" features World War II air combat where you assume the role of a British Royal Air Force captain and command an entire squadron. There are 46 types of planes to choose from, which fall in one of two categories: fighter plane or bomber plane to utilize in the game̵7;s single-player campaign, which comprises 18 missions. Unfortunately, the game has mixed reviews on the review-aggregating website Metacritic.com, many of which point out the Wii̵7;s motion-sensing controls as a problem.

    Heatseeker

    • "Heatseeker" was developed by IR Gurus, released by Codemasters on May 5, 2007 and features 18 different modern fighter jets and more action-oriented, arcade-style battle as opposed to meticulously detailed flight simulation gameplay. While the game has mixed reviews on Metacritic, the positive reviews praise the game̵7;s focus on action and even many of the more middling reviews admit that "Heatseeker" can be fun despite its flaws.

    Rebel Raiders: Operation Nighthawk

    • XS Games̵7; "Rebel Raiders: Operation Nighthawk" was released on September 23, 2008 and features futuristic fighter jet combat. Unfortunately, the game has negative reviews on Metacritic, where the reviews accuse it of being a hurried port from its earlier PC and PlayStation 2 iterations.

    The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces

    • "The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces" was developed by Access Games and released by Xseed Games on January 12, 2010. Based on a Japanese novel series as well as an anime adaptation, "The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces" has a more fantastical setting than the average flight simulation and features 18 stages containing a variety of missions and a control scheme where you use the Wii Remote as the plane̵7;s throttle and the Nunchuk as flight controls. On Metacritic, the game has positive reviews from critics who praise its anime-inspired visuals and action-oriented combat.

    WWII Aces

    • Released on March 21, 2008 by Destineer and developed by Arcade Moon, "WWII Aces" offers 12 different airplanes to fly, the ability to play as the German Luftwaffe, British Royal Air Force, or Russian Soviet Air Force and two-player split-screen cooperative play. "WWII Aces" has mostly negative reviews on Metacritic, which cite the games problems as being poor visuals and unresponsive motion controls.

    Pilotwings

    • Players looking to enjoy a classic aircraft game on the Wii may turn to the classic Super Nintendo game "Pilotwings," originally released in 1991, which is available as a downloadable game for the Wii̵7;s Virtual Console. Unlike the other Wii flight sims, "Pilotwings" doesn̵7;t offer air combat gameplay but the ability to fly a variety of aircraft including biplanes, rocket packs, hang gliders and even helicopters.
