How to Get a Drifting Boost in Mario Kart Wii

In Mario Kart Wii, the difference between manual and automatic vehicles means something entirely different than what it means in most other racing games. Manual refers to manual drifting, a means by which you can maintain greater control over your vehicle by holding down the drift button to power slide into every corner. If you choose an automatic vehicle, you’ll get the benefits of this control without having to use the drift button. But you’ll give up the opportunity to take advantage of mini-turbos, which are helpful speed boosts you can pick up on every turn. Read on to learn how to master these boosts.

Instructions

    • 1

Start any type of race. During the vehicle- and character-selection process, be sure to select "Manual drift."

    • 2

Drive through the track until you get to the first corner. As you prepare to take the corner, press and hold the "B" button on the bottom of the Wii Wheel. Your vehicle will hop slightly and then skid as you turn the Wii Wheel to round the corner.

    • 3

Watch for sparks coming out of the back of your vehicle. If you see blue sparks, you have held down the "B" button long enough to qualify for a regular mini-turbo. If you’re driving a bike, this is the biggest speed boost you can get by drifting. But if you’re driving a kart, you can hold down "B" even longer until the sparks change from blue to yellow. Yellow sparks indicate a supercharged mini-turbo.

    • 4

Release the "B" button while the sparks are flying to activate your mini-turbo. Watch your steering and the racers around you, because the extra speed will make your vehicle a little more difficult to control.
