Play in the time trials. This is just like a competition in itself, because you are racing to see if you can get the best time in your personal record. This is a great way to improve your skills as well as earn a couple of additional characters to select from. If you play a course over and over again in the time trials, you can race against your best score ghost to see what you can do to improve it.
Obtain the different licenses in the Grand Prix. This will not only give you more practice, it will also help you understand what to expect when you are playing against 11 other people. They will throw shells at you, while you will throw items you've collected along the way at other people. You will unlock a lot of extra stuff, and it will allow you to choose more races to play online based on the ones you have played in the Grand Prix.
Connect to the Mario Kart Channel. From here you will be able to connect to the tournaments. From time to time they will offer various random tournaments, but you are always welcome to race in the worldwide and national races. They will match you with players around the world and you will all select a course you would like to race on.
Voting takes place after everyone picks a course. It is always random, so you never know which race they will pick off of what everyone selected. In online racing, you will start with a score of 5 thousand points. Based off of how well you do in the online races your score will go up and down. This will give you an indication of how well the people are that you are playing against.
Meet friends and add friends to your network. This way you can set up races against your friends and family and compete to see who is the best. This is a lot of fun, because you can see how you rank against people you know. It is a great way to play with other people you know when you cannot get them together in one place.
