Rocket Start
The rocket start, which is activated during the countdown at the beginning of a race, gives you a speed boost from your starting position. Press and hold down the accelerator button in "Mario Kart Wii" and "Mario Kart DS" after the countdown has reached "2" but before it reaches "1." If you time it right, blue flames will shoot out of the back of your vehicle and you'll zoom past your competitors.
Trick Jumps
Trick jumps can only be performed in "Mario Kart Wii." Shake the Wii controller as your kart or motorcycle jumps off a ramp or over a gap in the course. Your driver will perform a midair trick, and you'll receive a speed boost when you land. The trick maneuver animation changes depending on the height of the jump and the direction in which you move the Wii remote.
Drifting
To keep your racer from slowing down while taking a turn in the track, press and hold down the accelerator and the "B" button in "Mario Kart Wii." In the "Mario Kart DS," press the accelerator, "R" button and left or right on the directional pad. This makes the kart drift or power slide around the turn while maintaining speed. Both games allow for a speed boost after an extended drift. Set the Wii drift settings to manual and hold the "B" button in a drift until blue flames appear. Release the button for a boost. Keep holding "B" until the flames turn orange for an even bigger boost. In "Mario Kart DS," rapidly switch between left and right on the directional pad to make the blue flames appear, then release the "R" button to activate the boost.
Shortcuts
Some courses have shortcuts that deviate from the normal track. For example, on the Wario's Gold Mine course in "Mario Kart Wii," you'll see mine carts along your track. Follow the carts off to the left to a jump that leads through a narrow cave with boost spaces on the ground. Shortcuts can shave a few seconds off your race time, but they're also more hazardous than following the normal track. Explore the race courses in both games to find the shortest and quickest routes to the goal.
