How to Use a Hand-Held Wii

The Nintendo Wii made its debut in the United States in November 2006. Since then, it has launched many different types of games ranging from puzzle to adventure, with many derivations of popular movies and television shows. It even provides in-your-living-room exercise sessions. All of its games work via motion sensor controllers, with the movement of on screen characters matching your own movements. Learning how to use these hand-held devices may take a little practice at first; however, they become easier to maneuver as you gain experience with the gaming system.

Instructions

  1. Basic Controller

    • 1

      Turn on your Wii console.

    • 2

Place two AA batteries in your basic controller (the one shaped like a rectangle).

    • 3

Activate your basic Wii controller by pressing any button. Lights will flash at the bottom of the controller.

    • 4

Hold the basic controller in your hand. You may use either your right or left hand, whichever is dominant or most comfortable for you.

    • 5

Position your thumb over the "A" button on the top of the controller. Use this button for most of your menu selections.

    • 6

Position your index finger over the "B" button, which looks like a trigger and is located on the bottom of the controller.

    • 7

Swing the controller back and forth as if swinging a sword or golf club, or up and down as if rolling a bowling ball, according to the instructions for the specific game you play. Use the "A" and "B" buttons to shoot, to release or to make selections.

    • 8

Use the "1," "2," minus, plus and the directional buttons (the ones that make a plus sign at the top) for additional character movements and menu options. These functions will vary by game.

    • 9

Use the "home" button to leave or to end the game.

    Nunchuk Controller

    • 10

Attach the nunchuk controller (the one with the rotating knob) to the bottom of the basic controller via the supplied cord on the nunchuk. The nunchuk serves as a way for you to control moving characters on screen.

    • 11

Hold the nunchuk in the opposite hand.

    • 12

Position your thumb on the rotating knob. Use this knob to control the movement of your character. To move forward, push the knob forward. Push it to the right, left and back to move your character accordingly.

    • 13

Use the "C" and "Z" buttons with your index finger to shoot, to release or to make selections as instructed by the particular game you play.
