Pick your character according to the race cup you must race in. For example, the Shell Cup features various straight-forward roads, convenient even for heavier characters such as Bowser. The baby and female competitors tend to be lighter characters. Analyze each cup, and select your racer accordingly.
Select your karts and bikes wisely. Each vehicle's statistics include speed, weight, acceleration, drift, off-road and mini-turbo. If competing on curvy tracks, for example, use a vehicle with moderate handling capabilities. This information is displayed in a bar underneath each stat.
Dodge all ground attacks to stay ahead. Protect yourself by holding an item behind your vehicle at all times. Do not throw away any given item until you pick a second one, effectively keeping you safe throughout the course.
Avoid aerial attacks. For example, the blue shell pursues the player in first place and explodes its vehicle. If you possess a speed mushroom, use it just as the shell is about to strike, giving you a boost forward and effectively leaving the explosion behind. The Pow block attack hovers over your head, shrinks three times and causes an earth quake. Jump as the third shrink is about to occur to avoid being affected.
Use any of the unlocked vehicles to help you succeed at each race. The Royal Racer kart is unlocked after winning the 150cc Leaf Cup. The Dragonetti kart, a faster vehicle, is obtained by finishing the lightning cup. Using these special vehicles will provide an advantage to further help unlock the mirror cup.
