How to Mod an XBox 360 Controller Without a Resistor

The Xbox 360 wireless controller provides its own power to transmit signals between it and the game console. You can tap into the power of the controller to add an LED light to enhance its look. The modification ("mod") does not require disassembling the controller. Supplies from a hobby store and tools from around the home are needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the Xbox 360 wireless controller face down on a table. Remove the battery compartment lid from the back of the controller. Remove the battery from inside the battery compartment. Place the two aside.

    • 2

Strip a 1/2-inch piece of insulation from the ends of the red and black wires attached of the LED light, using a wire stripper. Twirl each of the ends of the wires between your fingers to form rods.

    • 3

Insert the rod at the end of the red wire into the leftmost contact hole inside the battery compartment. Insert the rod at the end of the black wire into the rightmost contact hole.

    • 4

Place the battery back into the battery compartment and close the lid. Turn the controller over. Run the LED up the side of the controller and onto the front. Place a piece of tape against the end of the LED to adhere it to the controller. Turn on the controller's power switch to illuminate the LED.
