How to Get Rid of Bounty in Red Dead Redemption

Although you play as the reformed outlaw John Marston in "Red Dead Redemption," the degree to which he is reformed is entirely in your hands. If you want to steal horses, cheat at poker and rob people at gunpoint, that is your prerogative as the player; however, doing so will put a bounty on your head. The size of the bounty is effect by the severity of the crime and the number of crimes that you commit. When you have a bounty on your head, find a way to clear it promptly to prevent posses and bounty hunters from chasing you down.

Instructions

    • 1

Surrender to a lawman by holstering your weapon and standing still for a few seconds. Your hands will automatically go up into a surrender pose and you will be forced to pay a fine and spend some time in jail, which is represented by a cut scene.

    • 2

Bribe the people after you by holstering your weapon and pressing the action button while standing near them. The cost of the bribe will directly correlate to the severity and number of crimes you committed.

    • 3

Pay off your bounty by visiting any telegraph office. You can pay off your bounty in full or make payments as you earn the extra money. Paying down your bounty will lower the amount of posses and bounty hunters that come after you.

    • 4

Redeem a pardon letter at any telegraph office to instantly eliminate a bounty without having to pay. Pardon letters are special items that are given as mission rewards, found in gang hideouts or in random safes and chests throughout the territories.

    • 5

Allow yourself to be killed in action to restart from your last save point with a cleared bounty. This will cause you to lose any progress from your last save and should only be used as a last resort.
