How to Fix a Broken Xbox Softmod

The Xbox game console can be modified through software so that its operating system is accessible to the user. This "softmod" can cause a failure in the hard drive (in other words, render it "broken") that must be fixed if the console is to continue being used. The procedure will require a partial disassembly of the Xbox and the use of household tools.

  • Pliers

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug all of the cables connected to the Xbox, including the power cord. Place a towel on a table. Place the Xbox face down on the towel.

    • 2

Remove the four rubber feet from the bottom using pliers. Scratch off the two stickers on the bottom with the tip of the No. 20 Torx screwdriver. Remove the screws from the depressions where the four feet were and under the stickers with the Torx screwdriver.

    • 3

Remove the plastic tab from the bottom with your fingers. Remove the screw from beneath the tab with the Torx screwdriver. Scratch off the serial sticker with the tip of the screwdriver and remove the screw now revealed.

    • 4

Peel off the warranty sticker and remove the screw now revealed. Turn the Xbox right side up. Remove the top case from the Xbox and place it aside. Pull out the cables from the back of the hard drive that are to your right. Remove the screw at the front with the Torx screwdriver. Pull the hard drive tray out of the Xbox.

    • 5

Unplug the computer's power cord from the outlet. Open the side or back panel, depending on the make, with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the side or back panel off and place it aside.

    • 6

Plug the power cord and data cable that is inside an empty drive bay in the computer onto the corresponding sockets on the back of the hard drive. Place the hard drive tray in the bay. Plug the power cord into the outlet and turn the computer on.

    • 7

Download the Xplorer360 program to the desktop (see Resources). Double-click the program and follow the menu commands to install it on the computer's hard drive. Download an Xbox softmod program -- for example, Ndure -- to the desktop. Double-click the file to decompress it to a folder. Restart the computer.

    • 8

Launch the Xplorer360 program by selecting "Start," followed by clicking its text name in the "All Applications" menu. Click on the icon of the hard drive that is in the left column of the program's window. Click on "Partition 4" that is beneath the icon. Click on "Udata" that is below "Partition 4."

    • 9

Click "File" and "Open File" from the drop-down menu. Navigate in the window that appears to the soft mod folder that was downloaded earlier. Highlight the folder. Click the "OK" button. Quit the program once the files have copied over. Shut down the computer. Unplug the power cord from the outlet.

    • 10

Remove the tray from the drive bay. Disconnect the cables from the hard drive. Place the side or back panel back on the computer and reattach the screws.

    • 11

Place the tray back on the Xbox. Reattach the screw. Reattach the cables from the Xbox to the connections on the back of the hard drive. Reverse the disassembly process to put the Xbox back together.
