How to Read an Xbox 360 Motherboard

Reading the Xbox 360 motherboard requires taking apart the Xbox case and freeing the various clips along the covers of the system in order to gain visual access to the motherboard. This process requires only a few common tools and no unique, expensive items that may limit you from accessing the console's innards. Additionally, previous experience with Xbox 360 and general consumer electronics disassembly is not required in order to access the Xbox 360 motherboard for reading.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the hard drive from the top of the Xbox 360. Push the button at the end of the drive to pop it out of the system.

    • 2

Power off the Xbox 360 and disconnect its power cable from the power outlet.

    • 3

Pry off the faceplate gently. The faceplate is the white cover over the power button on the front of the console and can be pried off with just your fingers.

    • 4

Find the six plastic clips arrayed along the right plastic cover of the Xbox 360 and the six along the left cover. There are three on the top of the right cover and three on the bottom. In contrast, one of the left cover's clips is hidden under one of the gray case feet, so pop off this foot with the edge of a flathead screwdriver to access the final clip.

    • 5

Insert a small, plastic pointing device such as a stylus or pencil through the small hole in each plastic clip, while pulling up on the cover. This will release each clip in turn.

    • 6

Pry each cover off with your fingers once all the clips are released.

    • 7

Look at the back of the Xbox 360 where all of the ports are. There are seven clips here. The back cover is split horizontally into top and bottom parts. Release each clip as before, then pull each half of the back cover away from the other for removal.

    • 8

Release the clips on the Xbox 360's front cover. There are three on the left of the cover and one on the right. Once this cover is taken care of the entire bottom half of the case will be opened up, revealing a number of screws.

    • 9

Remove the six screws on the bottom case with your screwdriver, then pull the case entirely off.

    • 10

Locate the now-revealed DVD drive. It is attached with adhesive, so just pull it gently out. This will fully reveal the Xbox 360 motherboard, allowing you the ability to look upon its components and fully access it.
