How to Open Jigsaw's Chest in Saw

Based on the series of films of the same name, "Saw" is available for the Xbox 360, PC and PlayStation 3. The player takes control of Detective David Tapp from the first "Saw" film and must complete several puzzles to free victims of Jigsaw's maniacal traps. Jigsaw's Chests appear throughout the game, and you open them by solving a puzzle involving gears. Opening the chests will help you get your hands on some items throughout the game.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the beginning and ending cogs. Each of the Jigsaw's Chest puzzles is based around a simple gear puzzle. The aim of the puzzle is to connect the two gears that are on the puzzle board when you begin. Look in the top left and top right corner for the starting gears. Find the small dots spread across the top of each chest, which indicate where to place the gears to solve the puzzle.

    • 2

Move the cursor with the left joystick on the Xbox 360 to position the first gear. For other consoles, the puzzle screen lists the instructions. Place the gear down on a spot so that it makes contact with the gear that is rotating initially. Your new gear will then begin to rotate. The puzzles on the game are different each time, so you must determine specific positioning through trial and error. Press the "A" button to put the piece in place.

    • 3

Press the "Left Trigger" and "Right Trigger" buttons to edit the size of the current gear. Using different gear sizes is vital to completing the puzzle correctly. You can bridge the spaces between some gear positions only by using larger gears. Use the outline of the gear to determine which size is best for your current position.

    • 4

Place gears down so that they connect to each other. Plot a rough, mental course between the gears using the positions of the dots. Try to place the cogs in these places. If there is a problem that can't be solved by resizing gears, look to nearby gears for a workaround. The correct route from the first cog to the last isn't always going to be the quickest one.

    • 5

Remove gears using the "X" button if you have put one in the wrong place. The nature of these puzzles means that trial and error is necessary. Try different size combinations. For example, a certain gap may be impossible to bridge using one large cog and one small one, but possible using two medium-sized cogs. Connect the last cog to the first one to open the chest.
