How to Dismantle Your Xbox Controller

If you want to modify or clean your Xbox 360 controller, first learn how to open it. Safely and efficiently dismantling the controller is key in ensuring you do not accidentally do any damage to its delicate electronic parts. Familiarity with the dismantling process also helps you put the controller back together once you have taken it apart, which is likely a much more important task. Taking your controller apart is not recommended unless you have a basic understanding of electronics and controller design.

Things You'll Need

Xbox 360 star wrench
Plastic cup
Razor blade

Instructions

  Flip your controller so that it is lying face down.

  Remove the six visible screws with the star wrench. You cannot remove the screws on an Xbox 360 controller without a specially designed wrench. Place the screws in a cup to prevent any from rolling away.

  Remove the battery from the controller by pressing the top release button and folding the battery outward.

  Remove the white product serial sticker with a razor blade. This sticker hides the seventh screw.

  Take out the seventh screw with the wrench and place it in the cup.

  Pry apart the controller from the back, leaving the front close to the table. When you pull off the back, the buttons will fall out.

  Grab the circuit board between two fingers and lift it straight out of the controller. Once this is removed, you will have access to every component.
