Xbox Live is the online component to Microsoft's Xbox 360 video game console. The service allows users to connect and play games online, download movies, trailers, game demos and arcade games. The gamertag is an Xbox Live user's user name or screen name, used to differentiate people in online games. Xbox Live users can build up friends lists to send messages and join multiplayer games together. Friends can also track each other's activity across the service: their current game status, last played game and last time online are displayed on their gamertag profiles.

Power on your Xbox 360. Sign in to your Xbox Live account and navigate to "Friends."

Scroll to the end of your friends list and select "Add a Friend."

Enter the gamertag and click "Done." Include a personal message with the request if you choose, and click "Send Request." The Xbox Live user will be notified about your friend request the next time he signs in. Once accepted, the gamertag will show up in your friends list when they are online and playing games.
