Types of Mounts in Red Dead Redemption

"Red Dead Redemption" is an action Western game for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and home computer systems. Mounted animals are used by the game's protagonist, John Marsten, as a means of travel. In keeping with the Western theme, players have the opportunity to tame and ride wild horses and purchase or steal domesticated horses, mules and wagons.
  1. Domesticated Horses

    • Domesticated horses are commonly found in every town and settlement in the game. John Marsten can purchase a horse from local general stores and choose from different breeds such as a Painted Standardbred or a Kentucky Saddler. You also have the option to steal an owned horse from an unsuspecting citizen or bandit. Whether you decide to purchase or steal a horse, it will always be available for John when he returns to any of his safe houses or whistles for the horse to come.

    Wild Horses

    • A number of wild horses roam the land in "Red Dead Redemption" and any one of them can be your mount if you are able to break it in. During the game's initial tutorial stages you will learn how to use the lasso to rope a wild horse and how to keep from being thrown off the first time you mount the horse. This is the cheapest way to earn a horse without stealing and will come in handy if you ever get lost in the wilderness without a horse.

    Mules

    • When you reach the Nuevo Paraiso area of the game, you will be able to use a mule for your mount. Mules are found only in Nuevo Paraiso and are treated like domesticated horses. This means you can either purchase them in the store or steal them from someone else. Mules are not found in the wild and you cannot break them in. Mules are smaller than horses, slower and will die easily if attacked by a predator.

    Wagons

    • There are a number of wagons in "Red Dead Redemption," from stagecoaches to carts. Depending on the size of the wagon it may be pulled by four horses, two horses or a single horse. Wagons have a few advantages over regular mounts. Larger wagons allow you to travel quicker than riding a single horse and all wagons will scare away predators. However, wagons also have less maneuverability than a single horse and are difficult to control when taken off-road.
