Quickest Way to Get Gold on Oblivion

"The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion," an open-world fantasy role-playing game for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or PC, uses a gold-based economy, like many other games of its kind. In Oblivion, however, earning gold can be difficult and tedious, requiring long hours raising skill levels and exploring difficult dungeons to find the best treasure. But there are a few steps you can take when just starting the game to get gold as quickly as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the "Imperial" race when first creating your character, since they have the highest base Personality score and grant a plus-10 to the Mercantile skill. Most gold in Oblivion is made through the sale of items and treasure, and Personality and Mercantile are the attributes that govern how much is made per sale. So, to make gold as quickly as possible, you want to make as much as you can per sale.

    • 2

Pick "Mercantile" as one of your class's primary skills and select "Stealth" as a specialization when prompted after completing the first dungeon. These selections ensure that your Mercantile skill levels up as quickly as possible, meaning you will earn more gold per sale faster.

    • 3

Join the Mages Guild and visit each of the seven guild halls as soon as possible after exiting the first dungeon. Joining the Mages Guild requires only a simple conversation prompt with a guild master. Afterward, you can take everything not locked up in the guild and sell it without penalty or risk, making each guild an early source of easy gold. Mages Guilds are found in the cities of Cheydinhal, Chorrol, Skingrad, Bravil, Bruma, Leyawiin and Anvil.

    • 4

Sell the items you have taken from each Mages Guild hall while constantly using the Barter action to get the best price possible on each sale. Repeated bartering not only improves earnings, it also raises the Mercantile skill level, allowing you to earn even more. Sell the items to the same vendor consistently, because each sale will improve the vendor's disposition toward you, earning you better profits still.

    • 5

Progress with the game's main story, become a master thief or complete some of the many secondary quests to find further sources of gold. The availability of risk-free treasure in Oblivion drops off to almost nothing after emptying the Mages Guilds. But you can keep earning gold quickly by continuing to work on your Mercantile skill through bartering and focusing on as few vendors as possible.
