How to Pickpocket Colonel Autumn in Fallout

Colonel Augustus Autumn is the main antagonist of "Fallout 3" and as such he has a number of powerful items not found anywhere else in the game. These items are available to you during the final mission of the game after you have successfully confronted Colonel Autumn, but your game will end shortly after obtaining the items. There is one opportunity in the game to pickpocket Colonel Autumn before the final confrontation if you want to have more time to play with his items.

Instructions

  Complete the main storyline up through the mission "The American Dream" at Raven Rock. Do not start the next quest mission, "Take it Back," or you will be ineligible to pickpocket Colonel Autumn. It will not affect your chances to pickpocket Colonel Autumn if you start a side-mission.

  Travel to Rivet City using the fast travel option in your Pip-Boy menu. Walk west until you come to the Jefferson Memorial. The building is surrounded by a force field, but there is a small gap at the end of the field that is visible if you approach the Jefferson Memorial from Rivet City.

  Jump onto the rocks next to the force field generator to sneak through the gap.

  Enter the Jefferson Memorial via the Gift Shop entrance. Follow your local map to find the door to the Rotunda and enter to find Colonel Autumn.

  Press the crouch button and sneak behind Colonel Autumn until the display says you are hidden. Press the action button to pickpocket Colonel Autumn. Be aware that Colonel Autumn has high perception, so he may catch you even though you are hidden. He will attack you if you are caught. Save your game before pickpocketing Colonel Autumn so you can reload and try again if necessary.

  Purchase, loot or steal power armor and repair it to top condition. Bring the power armor with you and put it into Colonel Autumn's inventory when pickpocketing him. He will remove his unique outfit and put on your power armor if you leave the room and return, allowing you to pickpocket his original outfit.

  Pickpocket all of Colonel Autumn's ammo and leave the room. He will have put away his unique gun when you return, which allows you to pickpocket it away from him.
