As a means of identifying each player, users must create a personalized screen name, referred to on Microsoft Live as a "gamertag." You can perform a search to find out if a particular gamertag is available.

     Enter the desired gamertag in the search box on the main page of the website.

     Click "Check" or "Search" to search for the gamertag. The website will alert you as to whether the gamertag is available for use or is taken.
