How to Deplete a Planet in 'Mass Effect 2'

In his quest to discover the truth behind the Collectors offensive against humanity, "Mass Effect 2" protagonist Commander Shepard will let no potential resource go to waste. Shepard's ship, the Normandy, is capable of searching planets for precious minerals and gases. Any discovered resources can be collected and retrieved by the Normandy, allowing players of "Mass Effect 2" to purchase upgrades for the ship, weapons and character skills. The process of bringing a planet to "depleted" status ensures that you obtain almost every valuable resource available on that planet.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the left analog stick to move the scanner cross-hairs across the planet's surface.

    • 2

Hold the left trigger down to scan as you move the scanner cross-hairs across the planet. Scan the planet until the scanner interface on the right side of the screen spikes up; this indicates a resource vein. The area in which the spike occurs will inform you of the type of resource found.

    • 3

Press the right trigger to launch a probe at the resource vein; this will cause you to collect the resource found.

    • 4

Mine the planet in this manner until the planet status at the top of the screen changes to "depleted." This indicates that the amount of resources left on the planet is extremely low.
