How to Make a Machinima on Halo 3

Machinima -- a combination of "machine" and "cinema" -- is a genre of animation that uses video games to make movies. Amateur filmmakers can create new stories by using existing characters, sets and special effects capabilities. Built with machinima in mind, "Halo 3" for the Xbox 360 contains built-in software which gives users more control over camera angles, in order to enhance animators' projects.

Instructions

    • 1

In "Halo 3," you can use Master Chief, other Spartans or Elites as characters. Write a script and decide which sets you need. Study films and other "Halo" machinima to get ideas about shot composition.

    • 2

Use the Forge section to build sets. Save each set with a unique name to make it easier to locate. Alternatively, you can set the action inside one of the custom games. Sign in with your fellow players and act out scenes in a local game in the split-screen mode, controlling your characters as if you were playing the game.

    • 3

Connect your Xbox to the video capture card on your computer. To do this, remove the yellow, red and white jacks of the console's output from your television and plug them into the jacks on your capture card. If your television has its own output jacks, you can run a separate cable from the television to the capture card. When you run the software supplied with your card, you will be able to view the output of your Xbox on your computer and save it as a video file on the computer.

    • 4

Enter the game's Theater Lobby and use the "Saved Film" feature to replay your scenes. Films are automatically saved every time you play. Be sure to sign out all the other players, otherwise the game will remain in split-screen mode.

    • 5

Replay the film and begin recording with the capture card. Press "Y" to enter flying camera mode. You can use the controller to move the camera around the scene. Record the same scenes several times from multiple angles so you have more options in the final edit.

    • 6

Edit the video files to create your film. Editing software such as Windows Movie Maker is supplied free with all Windows machines while Macs come with IMovie. Use a microphone to add dialogue and any additional sound effects. Record sounds directly into your editing program to ensure they are properly synchronized. You can also add background music, titles and end credits.

Upload your film to the web.
