How to Repent Sins in Oblivion

There are two downsides to being evil in Bethesda's "Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion" role-playing game. The first is people will start to not like you very much; the second is the Gods themselves will also start to not like you very much. Of the two, the latter is a far more serious condition as it means you will no longer be able to receive any blessings from the Nine -- the Gods of the Elder Scrolls universe -- until you have repented of your sins. In this case, "repentance" often coincides with paying lots of money to people.

Instructions

    • 1

Pay off any outstanding fines. You will be called a "sinner" by the Gods until you pay off any fines against you if you are a criminal. Speak to any guard and select the "Pay Fines" option to pay off a fine.

    • 2

Increase your "Fame" level above your "Infamy" level. The Gods will label you a sinner and withhold their blessings from you if you are far more infamous than you are famous. You can raise your fame by closing Oblivion Gates, completing quests or shelling out coins to the various beggars you'll meet in the game.

    • 3

Go on a Pilgrimage. You can go on a pilgrimage to nine Wayshrines, one for each of the nine Gods, if you're broke or too despicably evil for the other two steps to be of much use. Travel to a wayshrine for each God and activate it when you draw near to complete the pilgrimage. Your infamy will decrease to zero upon activating the last wayshrine. This option is only available to players with the "Knights of the Nine" expansion pack.
