Multiplayer Video Games for Xbox 360

The Microsoft Xbox 360 video games console features an extensive library of multiplayer games across many different genres. Multiplayer games on the Xbox 360 can be played locally on the same console, over multiple-connected systems using the consoles system link ability or across the world via the Xbox Live network. The multiplayer functionality of titles on the Xbox 360 varies based on the individual feature set of each game. Note that Xbox Live network gameplay requires a paid Xbox Live subscription (see Resources).
  1. Shooters

    • Multiplayer shooters on the Xbox 360 focus on individual- and team-based combat, either against other human players or against computer-controlled opponents. First person shooters on the console, which offer a game perspective as seen through the player character's eyes, include titles such as "Halo 3," "Call of Duty Black Ops" and "Battlefield: Bad Company 2." Third person shooters, which move the perspective to outside the character, include "Gears of War 2," "Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction" and "50 Cent: Blood on the Sand."

    Fighting

    • Fighting games on the Xbox 360 focus on the ability to engage other players in battles featuring hand-to-hand and weapon-based combat. Fighting games feature same system multiplayer, with many now offering online multiplayer through Xbox Live. Fighting games on the Xbox 360 include "Super Street Fighter IV," "Mortal Kombat," "Marvel vs. Capcom 3" and "WWE All-Stars." Other classic fighting games such as "Super Street Fighter II Turbo" and "Marvel vs. Capcom 2" have been released as downloadable titles over the Xbox Live Arcade Marketplace.

    Racing

    • Racing games on the Xbox 360 occupy a wide ranges of play styles. While all games in the genre focus on successfully operating a vehicle to beat opponents in a race, other elements in the library of Xbox 360 racing games vary extensively. For players interested in more simulation-based racing focused on realism and the ability to tune vehicles, games such as "Forza Motorsport 3," "Shift 2: Unleashed" and "Dirt 3" are good bets. On the other end of the spectrum, games such as "Burnout: Paradise," "Split/Second" and "Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit" offer racing for players interested in arcade-style gameplay.

    Action/Adventure

    • Games focused on action- or adventure-style gameplay offer a wide variety of multiplayer experiences for Xbox 360 owners. Action titles such as "Red Dead Redemption," "Dead Rising 2" and "Red Faction: Guerilla" offer gamers multiplayer experiences, mixing shooting with other types of combat for intense and varied experiences. Adventure-focused titles, such as "Fable III," the "LEGO" series of games, and "Marvel Ultimate Alliance" offer exploration, teamwork and storytelling. Some adventure titles even mix in elements of role-playing games, such as the ability to level up characters and assign new skills. "Fable III" and "Marvel Ultimate Alliance" are among these titles.

    Sports

    • The Xbox 360 multiplayer library features titles representing popular sports from all over the world. Team-based sports games, such as the "Madden" football series, "NBA 2K11" and the "FIFA" soccer series offer multiplayer gameplay focused on recreating the team experience. Individual sports are also represented in Xbox 360 multiplayer, with "EA Sports MMA," "Fight Night: Champion" and the "Tiger Woods PGA Tour" series of golf games.

    Other

    • The Xbox 360 features multiplayer games that do not readily fall into standard genre categories but still offer fully featured multiplayer experiences. Musically-inclined gamers can look to "Rock Band 3" and the "Guitar Hero" franchise for multiplayer experiences that offer gameplay based on musical instruments. Games such as "You Don't Know Jack" and "Scene It? Lights, Camera, Action" feature multiplayer gameplay focused on trivia challenges for party situations. Games that blend multiple genres together to create new gameplay experiences, such as "Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts" and "Portal 2," offer multiplayer experiences unlike those in other genres.
