What Happens at the End of Assassin's Creed 2?

The end to "Assassin's Creed II" is filled with intrigue, mystery and wonder. Various hints from throughout the game culminate at the end, and if the player completes every side quest in the game, then the ending will answer many questions while raising more. Through remarkable storytelling techniques and revelations from hints throughout the game, "Assassin's Creed II" ends with a cliffhanger that leaves the player wanting more.
  1. Confronting the Pope

    • After a long journey for revenge, Ezio Auditore fights his way to the Sistine Chapel. His nemesis, Rodrigo Borgia, has become Pope Alexander VI and has acquired the Staff of Eden. Even though Ezio holds the Apple of Eden, a rival artifact, Borgia bests him, takes the Apple and stabs Ezio. Weakened, Ezio follows Borgia into the Vault, and he beats Borgia in a fistfight. Ezio refuses to kill Borgia, claiming that killing the Spaniard will not bring his family back.

    The Ones Who Came Before

    • Leaving Borgia behind, Ezio uses the Pieces of Eden to gain access to the Vault. Inside, he encounters a hologram of a woman who calls herself Minerva. Minerva explains that she is one of The Ones Who Came Before, a mysterious humanoid species that came to Earth when humanity was young. The Ones Who Came Before manufactured the Pieces of Eden to control the human race. However, a few humans were immune to the Pieces' effects, and they stole a Piece of Eden to start a war against their controllers. Minerva also spoke of a disaster in the past that destroyed much of Earth's population, and warned Ezio that it would happen again. Minerva then addressed Desmond Miles, who is reliving Ezio's memories centuries later. The hologram disappears, leaving Ezio with more questions than when he entered.

    The Assassins Flee

    • Back in 2012, Desmond discovers that the Assassin hideout has been compromised. Agents from Abstergo are bearing down on the Assassins, so Lucy Stillman, one of Desmond's partners, gives him a hidden blade similar to the one Ezio used in the Renaissance. With it, Desmond fights off the Abstergo guards and escapes Warren Vidic, one of Abstergo's executives. Desmond and his colleagues escape the facility in a van. While they are escaping, Desmond goes back into the Animus to search Ezio's memories while his partners discuss Minerva's words.

    The Truth

    • If the player has finished Subject 16's side quest, then the player is rewarded with The Truth. The Truth is a video where two humans identifying themselves as Adam and Eve are seen in what is presumably the Garden of Eden. Inside the building that Adam and Eve are climbing is a figure who is seen using a Piece of Eden to control humans. At the top, Eve turns to Adam and indicates a Piece of Eden in her hands. Adam calls her name, and Eve warns Adam about something that is chasing them. The video then cuts to black, and a binary code spelling "EDEN" can be seen.
