If you own an Xbox 360 game console and are a member of Xbox LIVE, you can create a gamertag as a kind of online nickname. Tied to your Xbox LIVE membership information, your gamertag keeps track of your achievement points in both offline and online gaming, as well as manages your system settings and game saves. If you want to use your gamertag on another console, or if you simply need to switch Xbox 360 hard drives, you can transfer your gamertag, and all of the information it contains, to a USB storage device.
