Complete the "Ulterior Motives" quest and become an "Evoker" for the Mages Guild in order to receive the quest. Speak to the character Raminus Polis in the Arcane University, and follow his instructions to speak to Irlav Jarol. Accept a key from Irlav Jarol and fast travel to Cheydinhal.
Exit the south gate of Cheydinhal and travel slightly south-east. Look for markers on the map bar at the bottom of the screen. Enter the Vahtacen cave and find a tunnel on one end, which takes the player to an underground ayleid ruin. Enter the ruin and speak with Skaleel, an Argonian mage. After gaining her approval, move to the northeast corner and use the key Irlav Jarol gave in the Arcane University. Follow the tunnel to meet Denel, an Imperial mage.
Listen to Denel explain the mysteriousness of the pillar standing in the middle of the room. Open the treasure chest beside Denel to get extra spells, but make sure your character is equipped with the spells from the "Things You'll Need" section. Cast a fire damage spell directly at the pillar and wait for it to move. Cast a frost damage spell and wait again. Cast a damage magicka spell followed by a fortify magicka spell. Watch the pillar open completely and reveal a set of hidden stairs. Follow the stairs to another chamber.
Use magicka and weapons to destroy the undead creatures lurking in the new chamber. Once the cave is cleared of creatures, climb the stairs and flip the switch on the right side of the wall. Wait for a set of stairs to rise up to the center platform. Flip the switch on the center platform and watch a cage lift off a rare item: the ancient Elven helm. Pick up the helm and go back and talk to Skaleel.
Follow Skaleel's instructions and take the helm back to Irlav Jarol in the Arcane University. Speak with Jarol until he sends you back to Raminus Polis, who is very happy to see the rare item. Raminus Polis awards you with the mage level of "Conjurer."
