How to Name a Gamertag

Gamertags are used by the Microsoft Xbox 360. These identify the player to other online gamers while playing and can be typed in by friends on their own 360s so you play against or with each other. To create a gamertag, you will need an email address, but the gamertag-creation process itself is relatively quick.

Instructions

  Enter your email address in the box at the bottom of the window located underneath "Need an account? Sign up here." Click "Sign Up" to proceed.

  Enter your date of birth followed by your country in the boxes underneath the heading "Welcome to Games for Windows - Live."

  Enter a password and enter it again to confirm underneath the heading "Your Windows Live ID."

  Select one of the secret questions available in the drop-down menu. Enter your secret answer before typing in the exact characters shown in the "Character Verification" window.

  Enter the name you have decided to use as your gamertag. Click "Check Availability" to check that someone else isn't already using that tag. Use a different gamertag if someone is using the same tag you wish to.

  Click one of the circles to the left of the Gamer Pictures on display to choose the image you would like to go with your gamertag.

  Choose which Gamer Zone you would like your gamertag to be associated with. For example, choose Pro if you wish to play against the best players online.

  Type in an email address you are happy for Microsoft to contact you through. Uncheck the box underneath if you do not wish to receive email-based news and updates from Microsoft. Press "I Accept" to finalize your gamertag.
