The Different Types of Food in Fallout 3

Food plays a substantial role in "Fallout 3" as both a healing item and an item to temporarily improve your stats. Throughout the game you will encounter food items in various containers such as cabinets, stoves and refrigerators, as well as in the inventory of defeated foes and at shops and restaurants. Although all food items give your character a bonus, many have harmful side effects.
  1. Prepared Foods

    • Prepared foods in "Fallout 3" take the form of prepackaged, nonperishable food items left over from before the war. Food items include generic named foods like Pork and Beans or Junk Food and food with name brands such as Blanco Mac and Cheese, Sugar Bombs or YumYum Deviled Eggs. All of the prepared food in the game is radiated and will add 3 RAD to your radiation level when eaten. Candy like Bubblegum and Gum Drops add only 1 RAD.

    Meat

    • When you kill an animal in "Fallout 3," you often have the ability to take and consume its meat. This includes the mutated animals of the wastelands like Mirelurks, Brahmin and Bloatflies. If your character has the Cannibal trait, he can take human flesh from a deceased enemy; however, doing so will make him lose karma and turn nearby people against him. Meat will also increase your radiation level; however, some meat products give you additional bonuses such as a 10 percent increase in damage for eating Yao Guai meat.

    Beverages

    • Soft drinks, alcoholic drinks and water keep your character healthy and give him additional bonuses. You can drink water from lakes, ponds, sinks and even toilets; however, most water has a high radiation level. Clean water bottles and sources are rare, but drinking clean water has no negative side effects. Alcohol like beer, whiskey and vodka raises your charisma and strength, but lowers your wisdom and can lead to addiction if drunk too frequently. Vending machines across the wasteland contain Nuka-Cola and Nuka-Cola Quantum, which raise health and AP, respectively.

    Fresh Food

    • In the irradiated wasteland, fresh food is a rare commodity , but the best choice for a radiation-free meal. Fresh food is found on farms and in some shops and restaurants, and it randomly appears when you search an enemy's inventory. The fresh foods featured in the game are apples, pears, potatoes and carrots. Eating a fresh food item gives you a plus-10 HP to your health without raising your radiation level.
