How to Take Apart a 360 Controller With a Phillips Screwdriver

Whether you want to paint, clean, strip or just curious to see what's inside, taking apart an Xbox 360 controller is a piece of cake as long as you have a small Phillips #1-sized screwdriver. The controllers all include seven screws that hold its casing together, which also holds the circuits inside in place. The procedure for taking the controller apart also requires a utility knife and is exactly the same for the black, white, wired or wireless controllers.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the six screws on the back of the controller with the screwdriver and place them all in a cup for safekeeping. There are two screws on the back of each side of the controller as well as two near the top of the back of the controller.

    • 2

Remove the battery case for the controller if it's wireless, exposing the barcode label underneath. If it's a wired controller, the barcode label will simply be on the bottom of the back of the controller.

    • 3

Remove the barcode label with the utility knife by gently peeling it off from underneath using the thin, sharp blade. This will expose a seventh screw.

    • 4

Remove the seventh screw with the screwdriver and set it in the cup with the others.

    • 5

Place the controller facedown and pry the back of it away from the front. The two halves of the casing should separating, exposing the circuit board underneath. You can remove this board and all the buttons now that they've been dislodged, as they were held in place by the screws.
