How to Check if a Gamertag Is Taken?

A gamertag is the unique name that players on Xbox Live use to identify themselves when they use the service. When you first sign on, or if you want to change your existing gamertag, it is necessary to enter a 15 digit name that has not been taken by another player. You can check the availability of your desired gamertag on websites dedicated to this purpose, or at the screen on your Xbox 360 that prompts you to enter a new gamertag.

  Navigate your Internet browser to a website that checks gamertag availability such as Gamertag Checker or CheckGamertag.com.

  Type the gamertag you want to check into the text field on the webpage.

  Click the "Check" button. The website will tell you if the name has been taken or not.

  Turn on your console and select your gamertag under the "My Xbox" menu.

  Select the "Profile" option, followed by "Edit Profile" and then select "Gamertag."

  Select "Enter New Gamertag" and use the virtual keyboard to type in a new gamertag. Press start and you will be told if that gamertag is available or not.
