How to Change Your Armor Color in the GECK in Fallout 3

"Fallout 3" allows users to customize their armor and weapons using the program GECK. This program allows you to change the properties of a weapon or armor, such as by increasing its health or decreasing its weight. You can also add new properties to the armor to change its shape or color. If you wish to change the color of your armor, you must extract the texture and mesh and alter them in Photoshop or a similarly sophisticated image editing program.

Things You'll Need

  • Fallout 3 Mod Manager

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Fallout 3 Mod Manager and select "BSA Unpacker." Double-click on "Unpack Fallout 3 Meshes BSA." Allow the program to automatically unpack this file, then double-click on the "Unpack Fallout 3 Textures BSA" and allow the program to unpack it.

    • 2

Double-click on the "My Computer" icon. Go to the desktop, or another personal folder, and right-click and select "Create New File." Enter the name "My Armor" then double-click on the newly created file. Create two additional folders, one titled "Textures" and one titled "Meshes."

    • 3

Locate the extracted files for the specific armor you wish to alter. Enter the exact name of the armor in the search bar and wait for the armor to pop up in the file manager window. Right-click on this file and select "Copy." Return to the folder you created and paste the file into the folder. You should paste files with the extension ".dds" to the "Textures" folder and files with the extension ".nif" to the "Meshes" folder.

    • 4

Edit the path of the files. Right-click on each file and select "Edit Path." Change "Powerarmor" to "MyArmor."

    • 5

Open the extracted texture and mesh in an image editing program that is compatible with the .dds extension. Edit the texture using the tools. For armor that looks normal, use mostly filters rather than adding new lines. Click on the "File" button and select "Save As." Save the armor under its original name, with the ".dds" extension.

    • 6

Open GECK by double-clicking on it. Click on the plus sign next to "File" and double-click on the folder that reads "Data."

    • 7

Double-click "Fallout3.esm" in the pop-up window and press "OK." Click on the plus sign next to the "Items" menu, and right-click on "Armor."

    • 8

Scroll through the window until you locate the armor you wish to modify. Right-click on it and select "Rename." Add "MyArmour" to the beginning of the name and double-click on it. This opens the "Properties" menu.

    • 9

Click on the button that reads "Armor Add-On" and browse through the pop-up window until you locate the files you have previously created. Highlight these files and press "OK."
