Keeping your Xbox in an enclosed space may cause problems. Enclosed spaces are not ideal settings for an Xbox. The system receives little to no ventilation and this causes overheating. While it may take time to see any damage, the interior of your Xbox is slowly warping and, eventually, you will get the red ring of death.
Failing to perform routine maintenance allows dust to gather on your system, making the Xbox work harder and overheat. When dust gathers on the vents of the system, air does not properly flow to the interior and causes the machinery to heat up and will eventually warp the hardware until it no longer works.
Continuously playing the system without giving it a break also contributes to overheating. Hours go by quickly when you are playing a game. However, playing your Xbox continuously without giving it a break contributes to overheating. Hardware becomes warm when it is used. Everything from computers to phones feel warm to the touch after being used for a certain length of time. Keeping your Xbox on for hours at a time forces the hardware to continue working, which makes the hardware hotter. Even with proper ventilation, constantly overheating your Xbox inevitably leads to the red ring of death.
