How to Wipe Out an X-Box Hard Drive

The Xbox is the popular video game console from Microsoft. If you are selling, donating or recycling your Xbox system, it is a smart idea to erase the hard drive to remove any personal information before passing it along. Erasing and reformatting the internal hard drive is simple. The option can be accessed within the Xbox's System Settings. You will need to know the console's serial number to finish the formatting.

      Power on the Xbox 360 video game console. Remove any game or video discs.

      Select "My Xbox," then "System Settings" from the main menu. Choose "Memory."

      Select the Xbox's internal storage device, press "Y."

      Choose "Format." Confirm the action. You may be prompted to enter the serial number, as part of the confirmation process. The serial number can be found on the back of the console.

      Click "Done" to erase and format the Xbox drive.
