Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Often referred to as simply "Modern Warfare 2," this game is a combat first-person shooter in which players play as U.S. Navy SEALs, British Special Operatives and Russian terrorists in fast-paced and rapidly evolving combat situations. The game throws players into close-combat firefights in such hot zones as Iraq, Rio de Janeiro and Moscow and forces them to fight undermanned and outgunned against legions of enemies. "Modern Warfare 2" won the awards for both best shooter and best multi-player in Spike TV's 2009 video game awards, an event considered by those within the industry as the Academy Awards of video games.
Grand Theft Auto IV
This massive open-map action game takes place in the heart of New York City. Players assume the role of a low-profile Eastern European criminal, who is forced to work his way up through the violent gangs of the city's dark underbelly. Players are forced into fierce shootouts with gangs, police and assassins alike, and often wind up in destructive police chases where the only thing higher than the horsepower is the bullet count.
Crysis 2
The most recent of the Xbox 360's intense games is also considered the most visually appealing, with media giant IGN.com proclaiming it the "most beautiful game on consoles." Players control a nanosuit-clad super-soldier through New York City, as they assassinate and ambush entire brigades of enemy tanks, aircraft and personnel. It is a one-man-army style of play, as players must fight through hordes of bloodthirsty enemies, often without allies.
Dead Space
"Dead Space" ranks high on many video game site's editor's choice lists. Taking place 100 years in the future aboard a claustrophobia-inducing mining spaceship, players must fight off waves of mutated zombies in complete isolation. The creatures come in many repulsive forms, often without warning. These enemies are not your stereotypically slow, moaning zombies either. They lunge at players from shadows and various unexpected hiding places. These sudden attempts at eviscerating the player when they least expect it make the game one of the most intense games on any video game platform.
Halo 3
The "Halo" series is widely considered within the video game industry to have redefined the shooter genre and establish the Xbox as a heavyweight in the market. It is also a collection of very intense shooters and "Halo 3" is no exception. The game is the final installment of the original Halo trilogy and takes the fight against an alien collective called the Covenant to a new level of intensity. For any hope of survival, players must use heavily armored weapons of war against technologically superior alien capital ships and massive walking tanks.
