How to Tell What Power Supply You Need for an XBox 360

Since its introduction, Microsoft has manufactured three versions of the popular video game console Xbox 360, each including a different type of power supply. As the product line ages, upgrades are made to the internal components to increase the performance and efficiency while decreasing the amount of power used. Therefore, in order to determine which power supply is needed, you need to examine your power connector, which is located in the back of your Xbox 360.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the shape and size of the groves within the power connector. Each generation of Xbox has a slightly different physical appearance (see the pictures in references).

    • 2

Match the Xbox 360 manufacture date with the type of motherboards. Xenon and Zephyr motherboards were introduced in the first generation of Xbox 360 in 2005 to late 2007, the Falcon and Opus second generation motherboards were introduced from late 2007 to July 2008 and the latest Jasper motherboards were used in the 3rd Generation Xbox 360 from August 2008 and are still in use today.

    • 3

Assess the type of wattage needed to power the Xbox 360. Although you can purchase factory power supplies and connectors for your Xbox 360, OEM replica power supplies and connectors can be cheaper to purchase through third-party suppliers. Xenon and Zephyr motherboards use a 203W power supply, Falcon and Opus use a 175W power suppy and Jasper motherboards use a 150W or 175W power supply.
